Milford, Pennsylvania
If you want to be close to a nice town with fancy restaurants, but also want to own a cabin that is within close proximity to hunting, then you should look into the Milford area of Pennsylvania. This is a great little town within driving distance to New York City. It also places you right up close to large public hunting lands in the Pennsylvania state parks. These are huge areas where people can legally hunt during the hunting season. So, you don't have to worry about buying a cabin with lots of private land to hunt on, you can use the publicly available land that is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. These giant state parks are the perfect option for people who want a small cabin and don't want to deal with the tax burden that comes with a gigantic piece of land. As an added bonus, you will also be close to the Delaware River, which gives you access to amazing fly fishing.
Catskills, New York
While the Adirondacks are the most famous large wilderness area in New York, they are not within easy driving distance from New York City. You can't easily drive up on the weekend and get back to work on a Monday. That is not true of the Catskills. The region of the Catskills has quite a few areas where you can buy large tracts of land and own a small hunting cabin and hunt on your own private land. This is perfect if you want to hunt alone and don't like the idea of a public state park. If you do want to go and hunt on a large public land, then you also have the option of the huge public parks. The region is one of the best locations within driving distance to NYC. From the city, you can just drive up on i87 and be there in around two hours. It's super convenient.
